The Overhill Residence wanted to enhance the colonial style of the home while creating a more sustainable yard. The first thing we did was help the owners see how colonial homes traditionally used plantings and gardening. From that point, we worked through a series of design options to align traditional colonial landscaping with sustainable practices. We were able to identify water issues near the house that could be resolved with rain gardens as well as rain barrels. The backyard was redesigned to include a large brick patio. The patio was built with salvaged bricks to give it a more colonial look. The backyard also includes edible plants and a bioswale.
