Small Backyard, Spacious Design

This project is located in South Orange, NJ.  The owners wanted to renovate their backyard and add a pool.  The design direction was challenging because the backyard was fairly small and rectangular.  The backyard also sloped with a grade drop of nearly 3 feet.
The final design looked to embrace the challenging features of the space by slightly angling the pool to not be parallel with the house, and we exposed one side of the pool to give it more presence.  The area nearest the house was at grade with the backdoor so we need stairs leading up to the pool.  Instead of masonry steps that are common in the area, we used steel risers to create grass steps.  The steel against the grass is a welcomed contrast of hard and soft.
The new fence used sustainably forested tropical hardwood.  We used gabion walls to provide needed retaining walls.  The end result has a spa-feeling that opens the backyard making it seem bigger than it is.
