Baptisia is one of our favorite plants for the coming season. Commonly known as wild indigo, this plant is native to the United States and it seems like everywhere you look, you can find another variety! A very permanent perennial with a vase shape, growing to about 3-4' tall. Soft lupine-like flowers on silver stems bloom from late spring into summer. Long-lived, good in poor soils and typically trouble-free, Baptisia will reach shrub-like proportions at maturity. It may need 2-3 years of maturity before producing significant flowering but it's so worth the wait! Some of our favorites include Baptisia Australis and Baptisia Pink Lemonade. If you look them up and find varieties that have an 'x' in their names, like Baptisia x Purple Smoke, this indicates that the variety is a hybrid.
