Park(ing) Day is Coming, Are You Ready?

Park(ing) Day is quickly approaching, are you ready?  This is the annual day for communities to create temporary parklets to bring awareness about how awesome green space is.  The action is pretty simple, you takeover a parking spot in a parking lot that is usually occupied by cars.  You can transform the space with grass, plants, ping pong tables, benches or whatever you think makes the most sense.  The best way to do it is to have tons of fun and be part of the surrounding community.

Park(ing) Day was started by Rebar in 2005 in San Francisco.  The group dropped 2hrs worth of coins in a parking meter, put down sod, a tree and a bench and then hung out for the time provided.  Since then, hundreds of cities have produced thousands of parklets around the world.

Simple but powerful….with or without an agenda, you still have time to organize and be part of this year’s Park(ing) Day.  I’m currently trying to get together a park let to happen in South Orange, NJ for the day.  I"m hoping to partner with a bunch of local orgs, businesses and the gov to start (and continue) the conversation about walkability and the importance of parks in the Village.  If you are interested in helping out in South Orange , contact me via the contact form.  If you decide to pursue doing your own Park(ing) Day parklet in SO or another city, make sure to speak with any authorities that govern the parking lots.  You might need a permit to do it.

If we get a spot in South Orange to happen, I’ll update you about it and post some images of our idea.  If not, I’m probably not mention it again…until, like, next year.
