Here at chambersdesign headquarters, we got some great news this week.  Our concept of Rain Parks has been accepted as a poster topic for the World Green Infrastructure Congress 2017 in Berlin, Germany.  We are super excited about the opportunity to showcase the idea of Rain Parks to an international network.  This is only the beginning!
chambersdesign will submit a poster that outlines how Rain Parks combines the design excellence with green infrastructure to create vibrant pubic spaces that make daily life better for urbanites!  Our poster will be among 37 other concepts representing nearly 20 countries.  We will be the only Americans presenting a poster at the congress.

We believe that RainParks are the next generation of urban stormwater management that creates unique, beautiful natural spaces in cities and suburbs.  In densely developed areas, there’s a shortage of large open spaces that big green infrastructure projects can be constructed.  At the same time, city dwellers need and want outdoor amenities that connect them to nature.  Our concept sees an opportunity to do both in small pockets through the existing fabric of urbanscapes.

The concept of RainParks was first developed by Neil Chambers in 2015 as a finalist for the Cities Challenge Grant with the Knight Foundation to be piloted in Columbia, SC.  The aim was to address the growing danger of stormwater in the city during extreme weather events such as Hurricane Joaquin in 2015 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016. The two hurricanes killed several people and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage.  Ultimately, the idea was not funded by the foundation, but Neil never stopped trying to push to RainParks a reality.  The challenges around rainwater runoff are only going to be more difficult due how climate change is dramatically altering weather patterns.

Over the next few weeks, we will create the poster for the congress and update you about our efforts around RainParks.
